Ian Machado Garry has responded after Islam Makhachev called Garry’s recent trip to Georgia a mistake.
For context, “The Future,” who is rumored to be the next UFC welterweight title challenger, most recently landed in Gori, Georgia, and trained at the Nugzar Skhiereli Wrestling Gym.
The Irishman had previously told the media that if he ever fights Islam Makhachev, the first thing he would do is go to Georgia and hunt southpaw wrestlers who will help him refine his wrestling so that he can dethrone the Dagestani wrestling maestro.
However, Makhachev thinks a quick training camp won’t help the Dubliner. In a recent interview, the pound-for-pound king said:
This is a mistake for fighters to go to some training camp for two or three months before the fight in order to get ready for the fight. It’s in reverse; this plays into such a cruel mistake because the person who goes somewhere for 2-3 months to prepare starts to believe in his skills, and then this doesn’t work. In two or three months, it is impossible to learn how to wrestle. This is what you have had to do since childhood. Many, many years.“
Islam Makhachev’s most recent opponent, Jack Della Maddalena, brought in the legendary Craig Jones to his training camp to help prepare for the former. However, despite that, the Russian recorded four takedowns and nearly 20 minutes of ground control time to dethrone the Australian at UFC 322. Jones’ expertise helped “JDM” avoid being submitted, but he struggled to scramble back to his feet and felt helpless.
Hence, Ian Machado Garry moving his training camp to Georgia could end up being a mistake and a waste of time, as per the 34-year-old.

There’s no one in the world that learns faster than me.”
