Ian Machado Garry had a message for fans who went berserk when he landed in Gori, Georgia, earlier this week to train at the Nugzar Skhiereli Wrestling Gym.
“The Future” came to Georgia to find southpaw wrestlers who can help him solve the Islam Makhachev puzzle, as discussed before on MMA Pros Pick.
The Irishman, who is the No. 2-ranked welterweight contender, is rumored to fight Makhachev next, and ahead of the potential title fight, Ian Machado Garry knows he must do everything it takes to learn how to stop the Dagestani wrestling maestro from taking him down once the octagon door locks.
Ian Machado Garry Surprised by Overwhelming Fan Support in Gori, Georgia
During his stay in Georgia, Ian Machado Garry was interviewed by MMA Pros Pick. During the candid chat, “The Future” admitted how overwhelming it is to see so many fans running to greet him with a big smile on their faces.
I’ve seen. I’ve seen a lot of people. I can’t walk from here to the hotel or even go toilet in the hotel without people stopping me, which is great. It’s great. It’s awesome. They all come up, they all have such a big smile on their face.”
He added that fans know him for his ‘good fights and good skills.’
“They’re all happy and excited to see me, and that’s, for me, when I wanted to get into fighting, being famous was never something on my mind. But people noticing me and recognizing me because they respect my skill, they respect my talent in the sport, that to me is what I like. So when I see all these kids, “Oh, Ian Garry, Ian Garry,” and they come to me, and they’re all shaking, this makes me happy because I know they know me for my good fights, my good skills.”
Ian Machado Garry trained in the same rooms that have produced Olympic gold medalists like Geno Petriashvili, Lasha Shavdatuashvili, and Vladimer Khinchegashvili.
When asked if he was a “little bit shocked” when fans in a small town like Gori recognized him real quick, the Dubiner added:
Georgia has such a deep history in fighting with judo, wrestling, and so much more; it only makes sense that they recognize world-class fighters.”
Lastly, “The Future” promised his Georgian fans that he will come “100%” back to their country soon, before adding:
Thank you for your love. Thank you for your support. And I’m coming back, and I’m going to need all your help. I’m excited. Let’s go. Let’s go win a world title.”
